Jo Palmer, Minister for Education

Registrations are now open for the Big Summer Read at Libraries Tasmania.

The free reading club is back for another year, running until 31 January 2026.

The Big Summer Read gives young people plenty of reasons to dive into books and have fun over the holidays.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the Big Summer Read is the perfect way for young people up to 18 years old to keep their reading skills sharp during the summer break.

"As part of the Tasmanian Government’s Lifting Literacy initiative, the Big Summer Read provides a fantastic way to help young people keep the joy of reading alive over the holidays," Minister Palmer said.

"Students can join the fun and borrow titles from their school library before school finishes or join Libraries Tasmania to find books and discover new eBooks and eAudiobooks with apps like StoryBox and Libby.

"It’s all about making reading fun and easy."

Participants can also connect with other children and teens in other states who love discovering new worlds through reading.

"Young people can track the number of books or number of days they read, write book reviews and have them published, and try reading-related challenges," Minister Palmer said.

"Our Government is delivering for Tasmania by lifting literacy. There are great prizes to win as part of the Big Summer Read, including book packs, Bluetooth headphones and a Kobo eReader, just for reading for five days or reading five books."

Illustrator Alyssa Bermudez is this year’s Big Summer Read Ambassador for Tasmania.

She will hold free comic book workshops around the state in January as part of a larger program of school holiday activities at Libraries Tasmania.

The Libraries Tasmania Big Summer Read school holiday program will be released in late December.

To register for the Big Summer Read, visit the Libraries Tasmania website or visit your local library.
