Jo Palmer, Minister for Disability Services
Tasmanians are being encouraged to reflect on their role in building a more inclusive community as we mark International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) 2025.
This year’s theme, fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress, highlights the responsibility we all share in creating a State where every Tasmanian can participate fully and without barriers.
Minister for Disability Services, Jo Palmer, said 2025 marks a significant milestone for disability rights in Tasmania, with the Disability Rights, Inclusion and Safeguarding Act 2024 formally commencing.
“This nation-leading legislation would not have been possible without the contribution of Tasmanians living with disability,” Minister Palmer said.
“They shared their stories, their experiences, and their aspirations for a truly inclusive and safe Tasmania and those voices shaped every part of this reform.
“With the Act now in effect, Tasmania’s first Disability Commissioner has officially begun their role. This is a major and long-awaited step forward, providing strong, independent oversight and a dedicated voice for people with disability in our State.”
The Act established the Disability Inclusion Advisory Council, which delivers independent advice to both the Minister for Disability Services and the Disability Commissioner.
Minister Palmer said consultation has also opened on Tasmania’s first Disability Inclusion Plan.
“I'm looking forward to seeing our community’s ideas and insights shape this Plan. We are delivering for Tasmania by making meaningful change for Tasmanians with disability,” Minister Palmer said.
“As we celebrate IDPwD today, I encourage everyone to reflect on what actions, both big and small, we can each take to build a more inclusive Tasmania.”
The Tasmanian Disability Inclusion Plan Discussion Paper is available on the Department of Premier and Cabinet website in a number of accessible formats.
