Nick Duigan, Minister for Energy and Renewables

The Tasmanian Government has delivered a 12 month extension to Bell Bay Aluminium’s power agreement with Hydro Tasmania, securing hundreds of jobs.

A deal has now been signed between Hydro Tasmania and Bell Bay Aluminium.

Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said the deal provides the time needed to work with the Federal Government on a long-term, sustainable arrangement.

“This extension will allow the Federal Labor Government to confirm BBA’s eligibility for the Green Aluminium Production Credit Scheme following finalisation of their consultation and design process,” Minister Duigan said.

“Smelters across the nation they are facing headwinds and this national challenge requires a national response.

“The Federal Government knows these are national issues – that is why they are already talking to us and why they are also looking at the issues facing smelters in other parts of the country.

“We have made it clear that it would be a perverse outcome for the Federal Government to support other smelters at the expense of BBA, Australia’s only aluminium smelter powered by renewable energy.

“We look forward to working with the Federal Government on the future of the Bell Bay smelter, for the workers, their families and the broader Tasmanian economy.

“The smelter is a cornerstone of Tasmania's economy, directly employing over 550 people and supporting hundreds more through a supply chain of almost 300 local businesses.

“The smelter injects $700 million of economic activity into Tasmania annually, and we are committed to its future.”
