Kerry Vincent, Minister for Infrastructure
Community feedback is now open on the designs for three significant road safety upgrades in the State’s North West.
Minister for Infrastructure, Kerry Vincent, said the Government is building safer and more efficient roads all around Tasmania as part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.
“The Tasmanian Government is taking action to deliver the things that matter most, including making roads safer for the community," Minister Vincent said.
“As part of the Bass Highway Devonport to Launceston Corridor Strategy, upgrades between Christmas Hills Road and Deloraine, and North of Sassafras, will be the first of six high priority projects to be delivered.”
These upgrades are jointly funding by the Australian and Tasmanian governments, each committing $192 million and $48 million respectively.
Proposed safety upgrades for the Christmas Hills Road junction includes widening the highway, installing safety barriers and providing safer turning opportunities.
Feedback can be provided on the designs from Tuesday, 20 May 2025 to Tuesday, 1 July 2025, by calling the project team on 0418 828 896 or emailing christmashillsroadtodeloraine@stategrowth.tas.gov.au
Upgrades to the Bass Highway north of Sassafras will improve safety and efficiency on a section of the highway between Latrobe and Sassafras. The design includes widening the road shoulders, construction of a safety barrier to separate traffic travelling along either side of the highway, and safer turning facilities.
Feedback can be provided by calling 1800 265 572 or emailing bassnorthofsassafras@stategrowth.tas.gov.au
The third project feedback is being sought for is upgrades to Sheffield Road, between Reeves Road and Don River Bridge.
These designs include improvements to the intersections at Melrose Road and Gillams Road, with the addition of right turn lanes and wider sealed shoulders at various locations to improve safety and traffic flow.
The Sheffield Road upgrades are funded under the Australian Government’s Road Safety Program, with $22 million from the Commonwealth and $5.5 million from the Tasmanian Government.
Feedback can be provided until 28 May by emailing sheffieldroadupgrades@stategrowth.tas.gov.au
Further information and concept designs for both projects can be found on the Transport Tasmania website here.
