The Tasmanian Government welcomes the acknowledgement from the Federal Government that National Construction Code (NCC) red tape has added unnecessary cost and delays to the construction of new housing.
The Tasmanian Government has already acted by announcing in December 2024 that we would defer implementation of changes to the NCC, significantly reducing red tape and construction prices for the sector.
Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Guy Barnett, said today’s announcement by the Albanese Government confirms that we have taken the right approach to reducing red tape, supporting our building industry and getting more Tasmanians into homes.
“Our Government has committed to blocking any new Federal red tape from pushing up local building costs, with our nation-first six-year pause on new mandatory National Construction Code requirements,” Minister Barnett said.
“This will help reduce costs, speed up approvals and give industry the certainty it’s been asking for.
“It’s important we protect Tasmanians from avoidable and costly regulation that adds to the price of a new home.
"Our Government is committed to providing more homes, giving Tasmanians jobs and telling investors that our State is open for business.”
