Jo Palmer, Minister for Children and Youth

The Tasmanian Government has reached a significant milestone in the development of the new Tasmanian Youth Justice Facility, with a development application now formally submitted to the Southern Midlands Council.

Minister for Children and Youth, Jo Palmer, said this is an important step forward in delivering a modern, purpose-built facility that has the potential to transform lives.

“We want to improve the lives of our young people in the youth justice system and change their trajectory, setting them up for a better future,” Minister Palmer said.

“Our vision is for a place where young people can learn and grow, with access to therapeutic support, mentoring and education.

“We will keep the community informed as this transformative project progresses through its final planning and development stages.”

The development application follows the completion of the project’s Masterplan, which was shaped through extensive community consultation.

The Masterplan reflects a therapeutic environment that prioritises rehabilitation, safety and wellbeing.

Young people in the facility will have access to education and skills pathways and be supported to change their lives.

The development application proposes a 24-bed facility, including 20 residential beds for young people.

Four additional beds have been included in the plans as a forward planning measure, enabling the facility to be expanded if required.

This approach responds to feedback about possible long-term demand and need for flexibility, ensuring that this limited expansion could proceed without the need for further planning approval.

The Southern Midlands Council will now undertake its assessment process, which will include opportunities for community input.

The development application will be available on the Southern Midlands Council website to view once publicly exhibited.
