Roger Jaensch, Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing

The third Report to the Tasmanian Government on Suicide in Tasmania 2012-2020, has been released.

The Report provides analysis of 693 deaths by suicide reported to and investigated by Tasmanian coroners between 2012 until 2020.

Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing Roger Jaensch said the report was a supportive source of information to guide the Tasmanian Government’s ongoing commitment to suicide prevention.

“The impact of suicide is personal and deeply felt, affecting almost every Tasmanian and their community at some point in time.

“Each Tasmanian to die by suicide is one person too many. These individuals each have people who loved and cared about them, and now miss them and grieve their loss”, Minister Jaensch said.

“The Tasmanian Suicide Register provides the most inclusive data that has ever been available on the impact of suicide on the lives of Tasmanians and the circumstances preceding their deaths.

“We know suicide is a complex issue and the findings in this and subsequent reports from the Register helps to further strengthen our suicide prevention strategies in Tasmania.

“Preventing suicide is a whole-of-government, whole-of-community issue and the report will enable us to prioritise assistance for people at risk of suicide and inform the development of preventative strategies targeted to the community’s needs.

“The Register is a joint initiative of the Department of Health and Department of Justice, and I would like to thank Tasmanian Coroner Olivia McTaggart for her continued support for this endeavour.”

The Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy 2023–2027 was released in December 2022, aiming to reduce suicide in Tasmania.

The Strategy is supported by three 18-month implementation plans, with the second implementation plan issued last year.

“Our Government is committing record investment of $320 million to improve the mental health of our community in every part of the State,” Minister Jaensch said.
