Four additional tennis tournaments will be played in the state’s North and North-West off the back of the Hobart International.

Tennis Tasmania has announced two junior international tournaments will be held in Burnie and Launceston, along with the Burnie and Launceston Internationals.

Minister for Sport and Events, Nic Street, said today’s announcement underlines the importance of the Tasmanian Government’s investment in tennis facilities across the North and North-West.

“We have provided $2 million towards the redevelopment here in Launceston to ensure the Launceston International is back on the calendar this summer,” Minister Street said.

“We’ve also recently confirmed an $85,000 commitment towards work to resurface the courts in Burnie so that the Burnie International can continue to draw top-level tennis content to the North-West.

“We have a long history of supporting tennis events. They provide a terrific economic impact as these visitors often extend their stay and explore our great State, justifying Tasmanian Government support for these facilities and events.

“These commitments have been critical in locking in the swing of events in February, which will come hot on the heels of the Hobart International.

“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future also invests in other tennis facilities across the state, including Nubeena and Kingborough helping Tasmanians to keep playing the sports they love.”

Member for Bass, Simon Wood, congratulated Tennis Tasmania on securing these events in our regional areas.

“There’s going to be a real festival of tennis across the State this summer and in summers to come,” Mr Wood said.

“It’s fantastic to see how much progress has been made on the Launceston Tennis Centre’s redevelopment as well. It’s going to be a fantastic facility that will see lots of Tasmanians taking to the same courts as our future tennis superstars.

“We can’t downplay the importance of these events in attracting people to our regional areas: players, officials, support staff and general tennis enthusiasts are expected from across the country and indeed the world.

“I cannot wait to see this area abuzz with the return of the much-loved Launceston International and this new junior event.”
