Guy Barnett, Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing

Supporting the health and wellbeing of Tasmania’s women is a key priority for the Tasmanian Government.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, said that this Women’s Health Week, it is a prime opportunity to start conversations.

“As a Government, we are committed to supporting women’s health and ensuring improved health outcomes for women and girls right across Tasmania,’’ Minister Barnett said.

“One of the keys to achieving this lies in our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, providing women with increased access to health services, nearer to where they live.

“Earlier this year, we delivered on a commitment to expand our community pharmacy program with extended prescriptions of the oral contraceptive pill. This important initiative means that eligible women can now get a two-year supply of their pill with just one script, rather than just one year’s supply.

“Also this year, we have enabled greater access to treatment for urinary tract infections, with participating pharmacies able to provide an assessment and management of patients with UTIs. This includes being able to prescribe antibiotics where appropriate.

“We're also progressing plans for the new $15 million Public Diagnostic Breast Care Centre in Hobart, delivering on a key election commitment. Importantly, this centre will be a one-stop shop, providing a multi-disciplinary team approach, supporting improved treatment and care for Tasmanian women.

“Our Government also supports the health and wellbeing of women by providing funding to Family Planning Tasmania and Women’s Health Tasmania. These organisations play a vital role in supporting women – particularly those who are vulnerable to poor health outcomes – and I thank them for their important work.”
