Redeveloped Penguin District School officially opens

Students, families and community members have celebrated the official opening of the Penguin District School, following a $20 million redevelopment under the Tasmanian Liberal Government, providing new state-of-the-art learning facilities for students.  

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the redevelopment brings together the primary and secondary campuses on the existing secondary school site, delivering a combination of new buildings and upgraded facilities.  

“The Penguin District School redevelopment has been designed to enhance the educational experience and accessibility for students and staff,” Minister Palmer said. 

“The works include a new administration hub, performing arts complex, gymnasium and outdoor play spaces.

“Community voice was at the forefront of the redevelopment, with extensive stakeholder consultation shaping the accessible spaces, strong connections between indoor and outdoor areas and the specialised learning rooms.

“The new sports facilities have also increased community partnerships with AFL Tasmania, the Penguin Basketball Association and the Penguin Football Club, further enriching the lives of students and the community.”

The Penguin Primary School and Penguin High School amalgamated in 2013. The redevelopment work started in 2020 and was completed in 2023, with students commencing the 2023 school year at the new school campus. 

Delivered through the 2018 Building Your Future election commitment, the Penguin District School redevelopment is part of the $179 million Tasmanian Liberal Government’s investment in public education capital works projects statewide. 

As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re investing $188 million for a School Building Blitz that will deliver upgrades at 15 schools across the State.
