Madeleine Ogilvie, Minister for the Arts

The inaugural Level Up Tasmania Video Game Showcase kicks off today at Hobart’s PW1, uniting local gaming enthusiasts and developers.

Minister for the Arts, Madeleine Ogilvie, said the quality of the showcase was testament to the talent of the state’s burgeoning game development sector.

“I am thrilled to see Level Up come to fruition, after the Tasmanian Government’s $500,000 investment in Tasmanian video game development for 2024–25,” Minister Ogilvie said.

“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future drives creative sector opportunities around the state, with our 2024-25 Budget securing more than $28 million for the arts and screen sectors this financial year.

“Level Up Tasmania is the first of its kind in our state – it’s an opportunity for Tasmanians of all ages to discover, try out and purchase Tasmanian-made video games.

“We have a small, but thriving video game development sector here, and it’s one that Tasmanians can be proud of.

“The showcase will feature games that cover all genres for all ages – with everything from BAFTA-winning game Night in the Woods to a UTAS project using video games to assist rehabilitation of stroke victims.”

Ms Ogilvie said there would also be special events on the PW1 forecourt, including a professional e-sports competition on Friday evening from 4:00 pm, and the AFL Grand Final screening Saturday afternoon, for those who don’t want to miss the big game.

“Then, on Sunday, Screen Tasmania has curated a series of talks and panels aimed at increasing the industry’s skills and market knowledge, so that the industry can keep growing and driving success,” said Minister Ogilvie.

“Best of all, everything is free. I encourage everyone to come and play.”

The Level Up Tasmania Video Game Showcase runs on Friday, 27 and Saturday, 28 September at PW1. Industry Day is on Sunday, 29 September at the Theatre Royal.
