Nick Duigan, Minister for Energy and Renewables
Tasmanians are invited to have their say on ways to reduce emissions and build resilience to climate change in our agriculture, land use and forestry sectors.
Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said the government wanted to hear from the community and people working in the industries as part of the Draft Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plans.
“This input will help ensure our plans are on the right track,” Minister Duigan said.
“Tasmania’s current net zero status is largely thanks to the carbon sink in our managed forests, together with a longstanding investment in renewable energy, and we want to ensure we manage this well into the future.
“Farmers are essential for our communities and economy, but we know some farming practices, particularly livestock production, are a key source of Tasmania’s emissions.
“This is an important opportunity to provide our agriculture, land use and forestry industries with a clear pathway to continue to improve sustainable operations into the future."
Key elements of the plans include:
- Improving the data, information and knowledge needed to drive change.
- Supporting practices and technologies to reduce emissions and increase carbon storage.
- Supporting sectors to transition to a lower-emissions economy.
- Building resilience to climate change’s impacts.
- Driving action through partnerships and collaboration.
Minister Duigan said the plans would build on work already underway to reduce the sector’s emissions.
“We’ve been supporting innovative ways to reduce emissions in farming through Sea Forest’s emissions reduction feed supplements, grant programs for farmers and research-based advice on crop suitability - but there’s more work to be done,” Minister Duigan said.
“I encourage anyone interested in improving the pathways to a more resilient, and lower emissions future for our agriculture, land use and forestry sectors, to provide feedback on the draft plans.”
Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is all about ensuring Tasmania is the best place to live, work and raise a family. These goals are about keeping that a reality.
Consultation will close on 11 October 2024.
