Jane Howlett, Minister for Racing
Improvements to integrity, animal welfare and the overall wellbeing of the racing industry are being delivered through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future with the introduction of landmark reforms.
Minister for Racing, Jane Howlett, said the 2024-25 Tasmanian Budget delivers funding for implementing the most significant reforms in decades across all three racing codes as we continue to support the industry that employs thousands of Tasmanians.
“We are already delivering this reform with the recent passage of our landmark legislation the Racing Regulation and Integrity Bill 2024 and the Racing Regulation and Integrity (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2024,” Minister Howlett said.
“The 2024-25 Budget delivers $1.9 million to progress the new integrity model over the next two years, incorporating the recommendations of the independent Monteith Review.
"These reforms are critically important to all three codes of racing, providing the framework to establish the new independent Tasmanian Racing Integrity Commissioner, with comprehensive oversight of the administration and regulation of the racing industry.
“I want to rebuild trust and restore faith in racing across all three codes and see them thrive.”
Minister Howlett said implementation of the reforms was well underway, including recruitment for the key role of the new Commissioner, and that the Government would continue to progress the work this year.
