The Tasmanian Government is committed to keeping Tasmania’s children safe and ensuring the vital work to implement the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry continues to schedule.
The 2024-25 Budget will deliver a significant $423 million to enable the delivery of the recommendations made by the Commission of Inquiry.
Treasurer, Michael Ferguson, said the Tasmanian Government is delivering on an important promise made to the Tasmanian people.
“The 191 recommendations, and their successful delivery, are one of the highest priorities of our Government, as part of our work to keep our children safe,” the Treasurer said.
“The Budget will deliver the funding required as we progress towards the successful implementation of these recommendations.
“While this will have a material impact on the Budget, we must right the wrongs of the past 40 years and take the necessary actions to ensure that our children are kept safe.”
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said that the 2024-25 Budget continues one of the largest reforms ever undertaken in Tasmania.
“Our Government made the important decision to establish the Commission of Inquiry and through the 2024-25 Budget we are now putting in place the funding necessary to deliver all 191 recommendations,” the Attorney-General said.
“There is significant funding to drive the Commission of Inquiry Legislative Program – driving a whole-of-government approach and coordinating the delivery of 54 recommendations.
“To bolster our justice system and wrap-around services, the 2024-25 Budget will enhance delivery improved support for Victims of Crime Counselling Service, continue funding for Tasmania Legal Aid, establish a Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Unit, and more.
“Not only this, but there is also significant funding set in place to better support our children and young people as they interact with state institutions – like our education and justice system.
“The recommendations made by the Commission of Inquiry require significant levels of funding, and have had an impact on the 2024-25 Budget, however, they are non-negotiables and must be delivered in full.
“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future relies on our State being the best it possibly can be – and delivering on all 191 recommendations is hugely important to this success.”
The 2024-25 Budget will ensure Tasmanians continue to be strong, healthy and safe.
