Eric Abetz, Minister for Business, Industry and Resources

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to ensuring there are opportunities for all Tasmanians to fish for trout in our amazing inland waters.

Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz, encouraged Tasmanians to get outdoors and celebrate Gone Fishing Day on 13 October 2024, with no angling licence required for anyone wanting to fish in inland waters on that day.

“This year’s national theme is “Fish for Balance – Get Back to Nature”, which highlights the important role fishing plays in the lives of Australians and how it provides social connection, relaxation, and enhances our wellbeing and appreciation for the environment,” said Minister Abetz.

“Our inland fishery provides significant economic benefits for Tasmania, particularly in regional areas, and Gone Fishing Day is a great time to recognise and promote what the state has to offer.”

There are a range of Tasmanian angling events across the state as part of Gone Fishing Day which include:

  • The Tasmanian Trout Expo at Brumbys Creek, supported by Hydro Tasmania, Petuna Aquaculture, Northern Midlands Council, Longford Fishing Club, Inland Fisheries Service and the Cressy community, which will have a variety of activities such as a tagged trout competition and giveaways;
  • Dulverton Anglers Competition at Lake Dulverton, which also includes a tagged trout competition;
  • Taylor’s Dam, Latrobe; a junior angling event organised by the Devonport Anglers Club Inc and Northwest Junior Anglers Club, and;
  • Bushy Park Estate Dam; a junior angling event, organised by the New Norfolk Anglers Club.

Gone Fishing Day is supported by Inland Fisheries Service and Anglers Alliance Tasmania with the cooperation of local angling clubs.
