Jeremy Rockliff, Premier

Kerry Vincent, Minister for Infrastructure

The Tasmanian Government is building intergenerational infrastructure right around our great State as part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.

We have worked with the civil contractors over recent weeks and determined a six-month exemption from new contract arrangements, known as AS4000-2024, should be implemented for the smooth delivery of projects over the coming peak construction season.

“We have listened to our important civil contractors and heard their concerns about the introduction of new contracts potentially impacting their project delivery,” the Premier said.

“With that in mind, we will exempt State road and bridge projects from the new contract terms for the next six months.”

Tasmania’s civil contracting sector is set to ramp up with $5.1 billion of infrastructure projects planned across the State Government sector alone over the next four years.

In a roundtable conducted with the State civil contracting businesses yesterday, the sector was updated on major road and bridge projects to be released in coming months, including:

  • Illawarra Road Stage 2B;
  • Southern Outlet rockface protection works;
  • Bridge strengthening works across Tasmania;
  • The final 10km section of the Midland Highway for upgrading north of Campbell Town; and
  • A range of rehabilitation projects following the severe weather impacts of late August.

Minister for Infrastructure, Kerry Vincent, said the pipeline of works was really positive for Tasmania.

“Major projects are expected to hit the market, including the Midway Point and Sorell Causeways duplication, the next stage of the Tasman Highway works at the Sideling, works on the West Tamar and East Tamar Highways and upgrades to the Bass Highway between Deloraine and Latrobe,” he said.

“The men and women of our civil contracting sector are ready to hit the road, and the pipeline of projects in front of Tasmania is truly exciting.”

Civil Contractors Federation Tasmania CEO, Andrew Winch, said the Civil Industry appreciates the Premier and Ministers listening to our concerns and stepping in to grant this exemption.

“The six-month exemption provides time for the Crown Solicitor, State Roads and the Civil Industry to work collaboratively to review industries feedback on the new contract and, we hope, transparently consult and action changes moving forward.” Mr Winch said.
