The Tasmanian Liberal Government is continuing to support Tasmania’s world-class, sustainable fisheries.
Throughout the course of 2024, Tasmania’s unique seafood industries have provided jobs and opportunity for thousands of Tasmanians across the State.
Our marine and inland fishers have also received access to great opportunities over 2024, alongside the 120,000 Tasmanians that like to get out there and wet a line.
Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz, said Tasmania has what the world wants.
“Our world-class, sustainable fisheries are the envy of the world – we recognise this, and work hard to strike the right balance between prosperity and sustainability,” Minister Abetz said.
“As a result, we have been reeling in the good news all year while working side-by-side with our recreational and commercial fishers.
“This year, we extended support for the Rock Lobster Translocation Program with $600,000 over the next four years to boost stock recovery and productivity, improving the fishing experience for all users on the East Coast.
"For our commercial fishers, our efforts to ensure rock lobster exports can resume to mainland China were rewarded – meaning there will be Tasmanian crays heading overseas and money into the back pockets of Tasmanians.
“We have a thriving recreational fishing community here in Tasmania and we are proudly supporting them and the groups that represent their interests.
“Our Better Fishing Grant funding and support for organisations like Anglers Alliance Tasmania and TARfish means we are preserving this way of life for future Tasmanians.
“We have provided funding to support the recovery of Tasmania’s most loved table fish, the sand flathead, with an investment of $1.2 million for a stock enhancement program.
“This year has also brought with it exciting news for the future – as we look to develop a sustainable Tasmanian commercial sardine fishery.
“All of this and more is backed in by our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future and I look forward to luring in more wins in 2025.”
