East Coast residents now have access to a play park amenity trending in more and more outdoor spaces with the opening of the Flagstaff Pumptrack.

A pumptrack is a track for wheeled sports equipment that - when ridden properly - does not require pushing or pedaling, but rather a 'pumping' action designed to maintain momentum.

The Flagstaff Pumptrack was opened in St Helens on Saturday morning by Deputy Premier, avid cyclist, and local Member for Lyons, Guy Barnett.

"Having being an avid cyclist for almost my entire life, I can tell you that cycling isn't just about physical health, it's also about mental health and feeling a sense of belonging with your community," Mr Barnett said.

"The Flagstaff Pumptrack will enable anyone new to cycling to develop their skills and confidence in a more controlled environment before moving onto mountain biking.

"The Tasmanian Government was proud to support the project with $500,000 in funding as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future," Mr Barnett said.

Designed and constructed by world renowned track builders World Trail, the Flagstaff Pumptrack is designed for use with equipment such as BMXs, scooters, skateboards, and mountain bikes.

Joining Mr Barnett at the launch was Break O'Day Mayor Mick Tucker.

"The Flagstaff Pumptrack is the best thing that can happen to a small but active community such as St Helens.

"Simply put, the pumptrack means kids off their devices, and families spending time together in our great East Coast outdoors," Mr Tucker said.

The Flagstaff Pumptrack is now open and is located adjacent to some of St Helens best mountain bike trails.
