Nick Duigan, Minister for Energy and Renewables
Tasmanians continue to benefit from the lowest energy prices in the country, as the Tasmanian Government’s makes life more affordable and secures the State’s reputation as a renewable energy powerhouse.
Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said the Tasmanian Government has stepped up in 2024 to take action on the things that matter most to Tasmanians, providing record power bill relief as part of its cost-of-living support measures.
“Recent data from the Independent Regulator has confirmed that Tasmania’s regulated electricity prices are not only the lowest in the nation but were lower than previous years," Minister Duigan said.
“But we also recognise that being a cooler state, Tasmanians use more energy than other states which is why the relief measures we have provided this year have reduced the burden on many households.
“As part of our supercharged Renewable Energy Dividend, every household and small business received payments of between $250-$300. These payments were on top of existing concessions that meant eligibly households received up to $1,433 off their power bills this year which was welcome relief for many.
“Additionally, we have been encouraging households and businesses to purchase energy efficient appliances through 50 per cent subsidies meaning more Tasmanians can reduce their power bills.
“While we keep downwards pressure on energy prices, we are also doing the work to deliver more on-island energy generation through our Tasmania First Energy Guarantee.
“Earlier this year, we ripped up the Hydro Charter and asked Hydro Tasmania to put Tasmanians first by playing a greater role in bringing on new generation.
“We’ve recently locked in Tasmania’s first large-scale solar project, the Northern Midlands Solar Farm, which will be the State’s fourth largest generator, capable of powering Launceston, or 70,000 homes.
“We’ve also taken action to encourage further projects through our new Renewable Energy Approvals Pathway (REAP) which streamlines investment for major renewable projects through improved processes, and better resourced agencies.
“Last week, we progressed our plans to deliver a renewable energy hub at Bell Bay, with the Federal Government announcing an off-shore wind zone for Bell Bay, and TasPorts releasing their bold vision for the Bass Strait Renewable Energy Terminal which will play a critical role in supporting offshore wind developments that drive significant renewable energy generation.
“As part of our 2030 Strong Plan, the Tasmanian Liberal Government is creating the energy Tasmania needs for our future, while also creating job opportunities and economic growth.”
