Eric Abetz, Minister for Business, Industry and Resources

Tasmania’s sustainable forestry industry and the many dedicated people around our State working in it are again in the spotlight as National Forestry Day 2024 is marked around the country.

From our earliest days, Tasmania’s forestry sector has been a key pillar of our economy and community.

From our world-class forest management practices to the high-quality timber and fibre products made from Tasmanian wood, the sector rightly holds a special place in our state.

Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz, said that the importance of the Tasmanian forestry sector to our State’s identity and economic wellbeing could not be underestimated.

“Our forestry sector supports more than 5,000 households around our state, particularly in regional areas, and is genuinely sustainable,” Mr Abetz said.

“It delivers a wide range of renewable products essential to the community, including sawn timber, veneer, flooring, paper products and our beautiful special species craft timber.

“It also stores carbon and is a key contributor to Tasmania’s net zero status, whilst also bringing more than $1.2 billion into our economy each year.

“Tasmanian wood is becoming ever more prominent in our urban landscapes with buildings including the new St Luke’s building, the UTAS Rivers Edge building, My State Bank Arena and the Parliament Square complex all showcasing Tasmanian timber.

“Importantly, sustainably managed forests are a key focus of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future to help us deliver on our emissions reduction goals while being a key element of our land management practices and bushfire mitigation activities.

“I congratulate the Australian Forest Products Association, Tasmanian Forest Products Association and all Tasmanians involved in this exciting future focussed industry as we celebrate its importance today.”
