Eric Abetz, Minister for Business, Industry and Resources

The strategic review of kunanyi/Mount Wellington is officially underway with the Terms of Reference released.

The review will help develop a long-term vision for the mountain and broader Wellington Park precinct to ensure it meets community expectations and can cope with projected visitor numbers into the future.

Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz, said transport and visitor infrastructure was already struggling to accommodate the more than 410,000 visitors the mountain receives each year.

“Under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we recognise the importance of our natural visitor economy, and the mountain is a critical part of this,” Minister Abetz said.

“The infrastructure on the mountain is ageing and outdated, meaning it is no longer suited to its purpose and that is something we need to look closely at.

“The mountain is an important part of Tasmania’s identity, and for locals and visitors alike, we need to make sure the mountain lives up to Tasmania’s reputation of quality experiences and maintains its place as one of our premier natural tourism attractions.”

The review will focus on three key areas: user experience, values management and administration.

User experience will consider sustainable recreation and access, transport solutions for the pinnacle and other areas of the park, appropriate facilities and infrastructure for users, including and new opportunities.

Values management will consider the view of the mountain from Hobart and its surrounds, environmental values, heritage and cultural importance and protection of flora and fauna.

Administration will consider land management including fire management and water protection, land tenure, governance and funding and planning arrangements.

Minister Abetz said the review would ensure we can have a good look at exactly where the current arrangements and facilities are leading us and carefully consider what options will help kunanyi/Mount Wellington maintain its iconic visitor status.

Public comments will be sought when the formal consultation process opens in the coming months with a final report and recommendations expected to be provided to government in mid-2025.
