Guy Barnett, Attorney-General

Today marks the official launch of a new legal service called Tasmanian Victim Survivors of Child Abuse Legal (TasVOCAL).

This program is funded by the Tasmanian Government and meets another recommendation made by the Commission of Inquiry.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said he was pleased to see this service come online.

“I want to thank all stakeholders around the table who worked to get this service up and running – paying particular thanks to the victim-survivors and of course Tasmania Legal Aid for their contributions,” the Attorney-General said.

“It is a proud day in our efforts to make right decades of failure by subsequent Governments, and to better support Tasmanians and their families who have been impacted by these abhorrent crimes.

“We want to make Tasmania the best place it can possibly be under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future – and meeting all 191 recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry is non-negotiable.

“TasVOCAL will play an important role in realising this commitment and I commend Tasmania Legal Aid for the work that has been undertaken to launch the service.”

TasVOCAL provides free and clear, independent, general legal advice about:

  • options for the National Redress Scheme;
  • civil litigation;
  • victims of crime compensation;
  • police contacts; and
  • therapeutic options for those impacted by institutional child sexual abuse in Tasmania.
