The new Labor Leader has confirmed that Labor has no plan to change its ways and deliver an alternative Budget, after spending more than a decade on the opposition benches.
Speaking on ABC Mornings with Leon Compton this morning, the Opposition Leader claimed he had solutions for the health system “I would love to be in government so that we could fix it,” and then boasted about having the answers for the state’s finances stating Labor would deliver a ‘budget reply’.
Mr Compton nearly fell off his chair and was forced to then clarify what Mr Winter meant by a Budget Reply: “OK, to be clear, it'll be an alternative budget that isn't dedicated to landing blows on the government, but it will actually coherently address the budget issues with the states finances, that's all.”
Instead of confirming Labor would finally outline what its plan for Tasmania is, Mr Winter quickly retreated confirming that it “will be a budget reply that we always do, and this is what we've always done.”
It’s no surprise that Mr Winter isn’t prepared to be transparent with Tasmanians, given the shambles of Labor’s election finances.
Mr Winter’s team went to the election with around $4 billion in election promises, $2 billion in cuts to services and infrastructure and an election financial statement that was riddled with errors and embarrassingly had to be withdrawn and reissued.
The Government recognises the economic headwinds that are affecting Tasmanians, and we acknowledge the budget pressures that we face. As a responsible Government, we will tackle these challenges in the best interest of all Tasmanians, while also keeping all our election commitments.
By ruling out an alternative Budget, it’s clear he doesn’t trust his training-wheels Treasury spokesman Mr Willie to finally explain to Tasmanians what Labor’s alternative financial approach might be.
It’s the same old Labor.
Relentlessly negative, and no plan for Tasmania.
