An exhibition celebrating the role of women in the Antarctic sector launched in Hobart today.

The Through Our Eyes – A Woman’s Place is in Antarctica exhibition shines a light on the unique perspectives and contributions of women who work in the southernmost continent, while also celebrating French and Australian collaboration in the Tasmanian Antarctic gateway.

Minister for the Arts and Minister for Women and Prevention of Family Violence, Madeleine Ogilvie, said the exhibition showcased an imaginative multimedia installation about women and their personal and professional relationship with Antarctica.

“It’s wonderful to see how different the stories in the exhibition are, but as I look at them, I see a common thread – a love for the Antarctic,” Minister Ogilvie said.

“Since the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, the Antarctic story has increasingly involved women, and there are now more ways to look at, and experience Antarctica.

“This exhibition showcases Antarctica through the images and spoken experiences of 59 French and Australian women, while highlighting the diversity of the Antarctic sector.

“We know how important Antarctica is to our island State, and our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future will continue developing our world-leading Antarctic Gateway to grow jobs, maritime services, trade and investment, currently worth more than $183 million each year to the Tasmanian economy.”

Through Our Eyes: A Woman’s Place is in Antarctica has been developed by the Antarctic Women’s Network, part of the Tasmanian Polar Network, with support from the Department of State Growth.

The exhibition will be held throughout August in the Bond Store Gallery at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, as part of the Beaker Street Festival and Australian Antarctic Festival.
