Tasmanian National Science Week 2024 has started with a bang, with the opening of this year’s Beaker Street Festival.
The annual festival, now in its eighth iteration, is a week-long celebration of science and art held in August across Tasmania.
Minister for Sport and Events, Nic Street, said the Beaker Street Festival was a fantastic addition to the Tasmanian National Science Week calendar.
“Beaker Street Festival is a unique event that shines a light on Tasmania’s many strengths, including our scientific excellence, our stunning environments and our talented people,” Minister Street said.
“The Tasmanian Government is proud to be a longstanding supporter of Beaker Street Festival, having provided a total of $700,000 for delivery of the events in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
“This support includes a funding boost for 2024 to help encourage interstate visitation and local cultural experiences during the winter period,” he said.
The event is projected to attract approximately 1,000 interstate and overseas visitors staying an average of six nights.
Minister Street said Beaker Street programming had grown each year, bringing immense value to Tasmanians, the state’s STEM sector and the visitor economy.
“The program has grown so much that Beaker Street’s festival precinct has expanded to accommodate the growing popularity, with events held across many of Hobart’s cultural and entertainment hubs,” Minister Street said.
Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz said National Science Week is a time to celebrate Tasmania’s scientific contribution.
“National Science Week provides opportunities to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of Tasmanian and Australian scientists”, Minister Abetz said.
““The Tasmanian Government is committed to promoting science and technology, offering the community the chance to immerse themselves in innovative and educational experiences.”
“I am thrilled to invite everyone to participate in National Science Week 2024 with numerous events across the State.”
Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is all about making our State the best place to live, work and raise a family. This event is all about achieving that.
