Tasmanian Government measures to improve support for workers and their families affected by asbestos-related diseases will become law.

Minister for Small Business and Consumer Affairs, Madeleine Ogilvie, welcomed the passage of amendments to the Asbestos-Related Diseases (Occupational Exposure) Compensation Act 2011 through the Legislative Council this week.

"The Asbestos Compensation Scheme, established in 2011, has been a crucial resource for those suffering from diseases linked to asbestos exposure in the workplace,” said Minister Ogilvie.

“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is about taking action, right now, on issues affecting Tasmanians, including workplace health and safety.

"Among other measures, the amendments passed allow the Asbestos Compensation Scheme to cover costs for support services for both claimants and their family members, providing comprehensive support during challenging times. They will also facilitate the use of the Asbestos Compensation Fund for professional training, community education and public information.

“An important change is allowing family members to access psychological support through the scheme for a period of up to three years following the death of their loved one. This is an important step forward in supporting our workers and their families during their time of need and will be a huge benefit to all involved.

“We are also committed to ensuring those suffering from diseases linked to asbestos exposure in the workplace receive the highest possible standard of care. This includes provisions to allow the Asbestos Commissioner to approve additional training for healthcare practitioners.

“The changes will also allow the Asbestos Compensation Commissioner to raise awareness of the scheme.

"We are committed to supporting those who have suffered from workplace asbestos-related diseases in Tasmania.

“These amendments will provide vital support to affected workers and their families, ensuring that the Asbestos Compensation Scheme continues to meet their needs effectively.

"These amendments underscore the Government's dedication to refining and improving the Asbestos Compensation Scheme."

The Tasmanian Government extends its gratitude to all stakeholders, particularly the claimants and their families, for their invaluable input during the review process and remains committed to addressing the impacts of asbestos exposure.
