Eric Abetz, Leader of the House
The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering the stable, collaborative Government that Tasmanians voted for, with more important legislation progressing through the House of Assembly this week.
As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future five important pieces of legislation were progressed, including:
- The Tasmanian Development Amendment Bill 2024 which increases the statutory cap imposed on co-investment for strategic projects that benefit Tasmania and help ensure we make Tasmania an attractive place to do business, invest in and create jobs;
- The Sentencing Amendment (Presumption of Mandatory Sentencing) Bill 2024 sending a strong message to those who would commit the most abhorrent of crimes;
- The Electoral Amendment Bill 2024 to bring greater clarity for Tasmanian voters, and bring Tasmania’s law on this issue in line with those which apply in other jurisdictions;
- The Farm Debt Mediation Bill 2024 which backs in our primary producers and removes red tape; and
- The Historic Cultural Heritage Amendment Bill 2024 improving protection and management of Tasmania’s treasured historic heritage sites.
Meanwhile the Tasmanian Labor Opposition had a shocking week, punctuated by Mr Winter falsely accusing the Independent Member of Franklin, David O’Byrne, of abstaining in a vote – he actually voted with the Government and the Labor Party.
Labor was forced to apologise to Parliament but have still not withdrawn their media release, which is still live on the Labor party website. The lie lives on!
Tasmanian Labor has successfully claimed the unenviable gold medal for talking Tasmania down in the parliament. At every opportunity, the Labor Opposition revert themselves back to the toxic negativity they know so well.
While Labor continues to be relentlessly negative, the Tasmanian Liberal Government will provide the certainty and stability Tasmania needs, while taking action on the issues affecting Tasmanians right now.
