Strengthening the future of the Blue Derby experience
The 2026–27 Tasmanian Budget delivers $250,000 to support the development of the Destination Derby Community Master Plan, backing the continued growth of one of Tasmania’s premier adventure tourism destinations.
Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events, Jane Howlett, said the Plan will consider both the trail network and the township of Derby, with the project expected to deliver significant environmental, social, physical and economic benefits for the community.
“We know mountain biking delivers real benefits to regional communities, boosting visitation and local amenities for residents,” Minister Howlett said.
“This Plan will help guide Derby’s growth as a world-renowned mountain biking destination, focussing on infrastructure, services and sustainable tourism while preserving Derby’s unique character.
“It’s important we plan for the future strategically, and the Destination Derby Community Master Plan will provide a long-term vision that builds on the success already being achieved.”
Minister Howlett said the Budget reinforces the importance of Blue Derby within the State’s visitor economy, where it holds a 52 per cent share of the mountain bike visitor market.
“This Budget recognises our nation and the world are facing turbulent times, with our investment firmly focussed on delivering for our tourism and hospitality industry,” Minister Howlett said.
“The establishment of the Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trail Network more than a decade ago transformed the town into a mountain biking hot spot, which now attracts more than 45,000 visitors each year.
“The continued strength of events such as the Tas Gravity Enduro, Women’s Enduro and UCI Gravel World Championships, along with the Red Bull Hardline at Maydena, demonstrate the global demand for trails of this calibre.
“A 2025 report showed the economic return from this sector, with visitors spending $50 million on products and services in the year ending March 2025 and supporting 159 full-time jobs in the region.”
The Budget supports the Government’s commitment to practical, long-term planning that strengthens regional communities, supports local jobs and delivers for Tasmanians.
