Keeping our community safe

With our nation and the world facing turbulent times, the Tasmanian Government is investing $1.37 billion in public safety as part of the 2026–27 Budget.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said the Budget takes further action to keep our communities safe.

“The Budget is getting the balance right, with a record number of police officers now on the front line,” Minister Ellis said.

“Targeted crime-fighting taskforces such as Artemis and Raven are cracking down on recidivist offenders and anti-social behaviour.

“This 2026–27 Budget delivers more than $265.8 million to investigate crime and continue this important work.

“We’ve rolled out hundreds of metal detection wands across the State to take dangerous weapons off our streets. 5,300 wand searches have already been conducted across the State this year, resulting in 105 knives and weapons being detected and 30 dangerous weapons seized.

“As part of our Government’s response to the tragic Bondi terror attack, we’re cracking down on criminals in possession of illegal firearms and implementing a nation-leading firearm buyback scheme.”

The 2026–27 Budget will also see a significant investment in support for the health, safety and wellbeing of those who serve our community.

“Our police on the beat put their lives on the line every day at work, and these investments will give them greater confidence to go about their day - and keep Tasmanians safe,” Minister Ellis said.

"We’re delivering our rollout of new body-worn cameras and protection vests to give our officers greater confidence on the frontline. 50 officers will be trained in the use of tasers as part of a $650,000 12-month trial, providing greater safety in high-risk situations and bringing Tasmania in line with all other Australian jurisdictions.

"We’re also delivering a modern rostering system for Police, with Project Horizon underway.

“A proof-of-concept is expected in late 2026, with a focus on improving officer safety, fatigue management, roster compliance and workforce reporting.

“These measures demonstrate that when it comes to protecting Tasmanian families and communities, this Government will always back those on the frontline.”
