Government Businesses delivering the infrastructure for Tasmania’s future

Government Businesses will invest nearly $6 billion into major infrastructure projects over the 2026-27 Tasmanian Budget and Forward Estimates.

Treasurer, Eric Abetz, says this includes energy generation and network assets, port, rail and transport upgrades and delivery of irrigation schemes.

“The 2026-27 Tasmania Budget delivers a strong economy and caring community,” the Treasurer said.

“We are delivering the intergenerational infrastructure Tasmania must have now and for the future.

“Across the Government business portfolio, capital investment is expected to increase over the next two years, with several major projects due for completion from 2028-29.”

TasPorts is continuing a range of port upgrades with $557.4 million invested.

“Tasmania’s ports are critical to the State’s long-term trade, tourism and economic growth,” the Treasurer said.

“We are investing in the redevelopment and upgrade of the Port of Devonport, the upgrade of Macquarie Wharves 4, 5 and 6, remedial works at Burnie Berth 4, and the replacement of the Bell Bay Ship Loader.

“The $204.8 million of infrastructure investment by TT-Line includes finalising the new infrastructure at Berth 3 in Devonport.

Water security helps our farmers grow, invest and diversify. This supports our economy and helps to feed the nation.

“Our significant investment in irrigation continues, with $392.9 million to deliver the Tranche 3 irrigation program, which includes works associated with the Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme, Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme Augmentation and the Greater South East Irrigation Scheme,” the Treasurer said.

“MAIB is investing $71.1 million in its four care facilities for Tasmanians seriously impacted by motor vehicle crashes. The Supported Accommodation Renewal Project will increase total client capacity at these sites from 29 to 39, and build capacity from 38 to 52, including care provider/family rooms.

“The project will provide contemporary accommodation and future proofing of the facilities to maximise the opportunity for client recovery, inclusive living and client independence.

“These upgrades will create significant benefits to the Tasmanian economy during the design and construction phases and beyond, delivering a strong economy and caring community.”

Energy security is essential to Tasmania’s economy, our growth and our electrification.

“Across the next four years, Hydro Tasmania will be investing around $880 million into upgrading and modernising our hydropower system,” the Treasurer said.

“Hydro is progressing projects at the Edgar, Meadowbank, and Scott’s Peak dams, as well as continuing upgrades at Poatina, Lemonthyme and Gordon Power Stations.

“These upgrades will deliver better efficiency and improve reliability, ensuring our hydropower system continues to deliver safe, clean energy for decades to come.

“TasNetworks will be investing $970.5 million to progress Stage 1 of the North West Transmission Developments project.

“We are increasing the reliability for customers at Zeehan and Sheffield, as well as supporting communities and critical mining customers on the West Coast with the Rosebery Substation Transformer and Switchgear Replacement Project.

“The Bridgewater Substation Circuit Breaker Replacement Project will include a trial of more environmentally friendly SF6 free circuit breakers. Other works include security upgrades and distribution network investment to build network resilience.”

Investment in TasRail continues for its locomotive renewal and below rail infrastructure projects.

“Specific projects such as the Bell Bay rail and freight terminal upgrade, the Hampshire Hub near Burnie are included in the 2026‑27 Budget,” the Treasurer said.

“The Bulk Minerals Export Facility expansion to augment the capacity and productivity of the recently completed Burnie Port mineral shiploader continues, along with the Locomotive Life Extension program.

“The Budget, through this $5.9 billion pipeline, delivers a strong economy and caring community.”
