Delivering for North West Tasmania
The Tasmanian Government is delivering a strong economy and caring community.
The 2026-27 Budget makes the savings needed whilst continuing to deliver the essential services and build the infrastructure North West must have now, and for the future.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said this Budget recognises our nation, and the world, are facing turbulent times.
“It gives us the headroom we need to deal with the challenges ahead,” the Premier said.
“We are getting the balance right, ensuring our economy continues to be strong, resilient and well positioned for the future.
“We are delivering healthcare, education, roads, infrastructure and services for North West Tasmania.”
Health and Mental Health
- $14.3m to upgrade the North West Regional Hospital, including for an expanded ambulance drop-off area and Emergency Department expansion;
- $40m to deliver the North West Mental Health Precinct, providing a safe and supportive 22-bed mental health inpatient unit to replace the Spencer Clinic;
- Significantly increasing access to bulk-billed GP appointments through TassieDocs;
- Boost access to life-saving breast screening by delivering a new permanent clinic at Devonport; and
- $7.6m for the new Devonport Mental Health Hub, including a Safe Haven, Recovery College and Integration Hub.
Education
- Upgrades and redevelopment of Burnie Primary, Montello Primary and Havenview Primary schools;
- $60.4m for the North West Support School new Devonport campus and upgrades to the Burnie Campus;
- Healthy School Lunch Program at East Devonport Primary, Havenview Primary, Hillcrest Primary, Montello Primary, Romaine Park Primary, Sassafras Primary, Smithton High, West Ulverstone Primary and Yolla District High School; and
- Delivery of a new Child and Family Learning Centre in Smithton.
Infrastructure
- $145m for improvements to the Bass Highway from Devonport to Launceston;
- $42m to complete the Wynyard to Marrawah section of the Bass Highway;
- Finalisation of the $50m Bass Highway upgrades from Cooee to Wynyard, including the completed Cam River Bridge replacement;
- $16.6m for the Devonport to Cradle Mountain Corridor improvements;
- Upgrades to the Ridgley and Stanley highways;
- $69.3m for the construction of the Burnie Court complex;
- Investment in visitor and walking experiences at the Nut and Dial Range;
- $10m for the Wynyard Emergency Services Hub;
- $300,000 for improvements to the Burnie Surf Live Saving Club’s clubroom;
- $13.5m for the Dial Regional Sports Complex Infrastructure Upgrades Project; and
- $311m for three Tranche 3 irrigation schemes including the Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme Augmentation.
West Coast and King Island
- $900,000 for a CT Scanner on the West Coast to enable access to diagnostic imaging health services;
- A new ambulance station on King Island;
- $5.5m to upgrade the West Coast District Hospital to improve access to aged care services;
- $36.7m for the West Coast Wilderness Railway;
- Delivering our Healthy School Lunch Program at Mountain Heights and King Island District School;
- $7.2m for the maintenance and upgrading of existing tracks in the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area;
- $2.3m for the Edge of the World experience at the mouth of the Arthur River;
- $33.3m for the Next Iconic multi-day Walk on the West Coast; and
- $2m for the Rosebery Emergency Services Hub.
