Budget to invest record funding into Tasmania’s health system
The 2026-27 Budget continues the Tasmanian Government’s plan to deliver better healthcare for Tasmanians, with more than $10 million invested into the health system every single day.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the Budget provides record investment into the health system, with more than $15 billion in health expenditure in 2026-27 and over the Forward Estimates.
“This Budget delivers a strong economy and caring community, which means ensuring Tasmanians can access the health services they need in the right place, at the right time,” Minister Archer said.
“Our Government is investing in the services and infrastructure needed to meet growing demand and continue delivering the essential services Tasmanians expect and deserve.
“Across the North, North West and South, the Budget is delivering the facilities, services and healthcare workforce Tasmania needs to meet growing demand.
“The 2026–27 Budget includes $1.2 billion for Emergency Departments, supporting timely, high‑quality emergency care for Tasmanians and strengthening the frontline of the hospital system.
“We’re also investing $16 million for our TassieDocs initiative, which will improve access to primary care, ease pressure on our hospitals, and provide tens of thousands of free GP services in areas of community need in each region.
“It also reaffirms our commitment to a new $15 million Huon Health Precinct and Mental Health Hub, delivering 100 per cent bulk-billed GP appointments, after-hours and weekend services, and a base for mental health outreach programs.
“We are also delivering important infrastructure upgrades with more than $844 million to deliver new and existing projects across the State, including major works at our hospitals, community-based health facilities, and new ambulance stations.
“The Budget delivers on the Meningococcal B vaccine program and increases access to life-saving breast screening across Tasmania, with a major $30.8 million funding boost including the delivery and operation of the new Tasmanian Breast Care Centre and four new permanent breast screening clinics, prioritising early detection.
“We are delivering more access to timely healthcare with the expansion of the role of community pharmacies. This Budget includes just over $1 million funding to support more than 150 pharmacists to complete additional training, enabling them to treat more common conditions, and a further $1 million grant program to extend pharmacy opening hours on evenings and weekends.
“Significant funding of $20 million is allocated over four years to The Health Revolution: 20‑Year Preventive Health Strategy, the Tasmanian Government’s bold, long-term plan to place prevention at the heart of our health system and communities.
“The Budget also invests in mental health and wellbeing services, including new mental health beds at St Johns Park, boosting the capacity of Youth Mental Health Hospital in the Home, and support for community organisations.
“The 2026-27 Budget continues our plan to strengthen Tasmania’s health system and deliver more services closer to home.
“We are making the savings needed, while continuing to deliver the services and build the infrastructure Tasmania needs now, and for the future.
“This budget gives us headroom to handle the challenges ahead.
“We are getting the balance right.”
