Tasmania ready to assist as events in Afghanistan unfold

I join all Tasmanians in saying that our thoughts are with all those in Afghanistan faced with the current unfolding crisis, as well as those currently in Australia who have family and friends impacted.

Following the Federal Government’s announcement yesterday that Australia will be taking humanitarian refugees, with a particular focus on women and girls and minorities who will be particularly at risk from the Taliban, Tasmania stands ready to assist in that effort should that be required.

The Department of Premier and Cabinet has held discussions with the Australian Government regarding any support that might be of assistance from the Tasmanian Government to support the return of Afghan Australians and refugees.

We have also engaged with local peak community groups to identify opportunities that could be passed onto the Australian Government as part of the national response.

I also want to acknowledge the distress this situation is causing the Tasmanian Afghanistan community, as well as our ADF personnel and the veterans’ community.

Anyone feeling distress is encouraged to reach out for support through the Mental Health Services Helpline which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 1800 332 388 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
