Tasmania’s Cattle Hill Wind Farm will become the first in Australia to trial new technology to help protect endangered Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagles.
The IdentiFlight aerial monitoring and detection system uses an algorithm to identify eagles within seconds, and will shut down the wind turbine if it is at risk of a collision.
Sixteen IdentiFlight units will be installed at the Cattle Hill Wind Farm in the Central Highlands, and will be able to shut down any of the 48 turbines as necessary.
Construction started on the wind farm earlier this year, and once operational, the farm will power approximately 63,500 Tasmanian homes.
The Hodgman Liberal Government has an ambitious target of achieving the lowest regulated power prices in the country by 2022, and becoming fully self-sufficient in the same timeframe.
