New learning spaces for Rokeby High students

The Hodgman Liberal Government is investing $110 million into improving school infrastructure and today it was my pleasure to officially open Rokeby High School’s new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Hub.

The Tasmanian Government allocated $1.5 million for this major refurbishment in order to provide students with contemporary science facilities, which also included changes to the Materials, Design Technology and Art learning areas to make the integration of the disciplines seamless.  Prior to this, these learning areas operated in isolation and were disconnected from science.

The school has worked closely with architect Tim Penney and builders Bennett Construction to create a cohesive and highly engaging learning space where students are able to access integrated learning across all of these disciplines, investigating their connectivity to daily life and work on real world applications.

This will provide opportunities for Rokeby High students to develop valuable high level design skills, computational thinking and problem-solving competencies to support them on their career pathways.

The new facilities mean that students will have access to a wide range of science, design and engineering industry pathway learning opportunities through:

  • 3D design and printing
  • Laser cutting
  • Robotics
  • Coding and Gaming
  • Virtual Reality systems
  • Synchronous Delivery opportunities through the new state of the art video conferencing classroom
  • A portable virtual classroom for teaching and learning
  • Practice analysis and digital coaching
  • Industry application of Go Pros/Hover cams
  • A suite of new Surface pro tablets with wireless integrated miracast technology.

The school is also moving to offer Year 11 and 12 courses in 2017, meaning that there will now be huge potential for subject offerings in these disciplines.

Rokeby High School has also been selected as an ‘Amplified’ STEM school by the Department of Education, meaning that it is part of a selected group leading the way in STEM professional learning and integrated curriculum planning for Tasmanian high schools.

Education is a major focus of our Government as we reinvest the dividends of a positive Budget position into the core, essential services, like education.

Providing students with modern, flexible learning environments is a key part of continuing to improve students’ learning outcomes so all young Tasmanians have the opportunity to build their knowledge and a path to their future career.
