Re-Issued: Improved support for students with disability

The Hodgman Liberal Government is undertaking significant education reforms from which vulnerable families and those children with disabilities will benefit.

For the first time we are formalising dual enrolment for students with a disability to access both mainstream and support schools, Government and non-Government, in order to address their individual learning needs.

We are also going to further support and strengthen the Home Education system, including allowing children who are home educated to be able to partially enrol at a school.

These two elements will significantly improve education services for children living with disability, with the opportunity to better integrate with their community to allow them to achieve their full potential.

The Education Act Bill also includes scope to help resolve reasons for chronic, unexplained non-attendance at school.

In the future, families will attend a conciliation conference process to ensure practical support is provided for schools and parents to work through complex issues that may have previously been hindered under the previous system.

The Government is committed to ensuring all Tasmanian children reach their full potential.

As part of the Child Safety services redesign, $5 million from the Education Department will provide services and support for children at risk in Government schools and child and family centres.

The Tasmanian Government has put in place a range of initiatives to change the life trajectory for marginalised and vulnerable children and young people, and the education reforms further reinforce these.
