The Tasmanian Liberal Government is making record investments into our sustainable primary industries and the result is a booming sector that is leading the nation, driving regional communities and building a future for Tasmanians by creating jobs.
Since the Liberal Government was first elected in 2014 we recognised agriculture and other primary industries as important pillars that support the broader Tasmanian economy, employing thousands of Tasmanians in regional communities.
Throughout the past 8 years there has been no stronger supporter of our primary industries sector than outgoing Premier and Treasurer Peter Gutwein, and we thank him for his outstanding leadership and enthusiastic commitment to sustainable growth and excellence.
It’s this support and the commitment of the Tasmanian Liberal Government that has seen us go from strength to strength including;
The fact is that Tasmanian farmers produce over five times more food than Tasmanians consume with the surplus sold interstate and overseas and we are backing in our farmers, with almost $50 million in additional funding being invested as part of the Accelerating Agriculture policy to accelerate progress towards the long-term goal for the sector.
This is in addition to the Government’s commitment of $15 million to develop a nation-leading Tasmanian agricultural precinct in Launceston, $7 million to upgrade Tasmania’s dairy and cropping research farms, and $2 million to expand the Strategic Industry Partnership Program to support key agricultural sectors.
The State’s salmon industry is also a great success story, globally recognised for its innovation and our highest value food product delivering more than $1.01 billion in direct value to the Tasmanian economy. This year the Tasmanian Government is getting on with the job of consulting industry and the community about a new 10-year Tasmanian Salmon Future Directions Plan, which will focus on targeting value growth, continuous improvement in regulation, compliance and industry performance, and ensuring value is shared with the Tasmanian community.
The Tasmania Liberal Government thanks all Tasmanian farmers, producers, businesses and organisations who have helped us grow the sector and deliver these outstanding achievements.
This success is testament to the Premier’s vision and backing for the critical portfolios of Primary Industries and Water and Trade and we will continue to support and deliver for Tasmanians in these key sectors.
