First step towards developing the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan

Today, along with Education Ministers from around the country, I met with teachers, school leaders, and other education experts at Parliament House in Canberra to prioritise actions to address the national challenges of teacher demand, supply and retention.

I would like to thank all of our principals, teachers and support staff for the invaluable work they do every day in educating our next generation of learners, and the amazing dedication and resilience they have shown over the last two years, in particular.

Today we heard from teachers, principals and educators on the personal and professional challenges facing the education system across the nation and, in particular, the challenge of ensuring our workforce is valued and respected and that teaching remains an attractive career option.

Education Ministers from all States and Territories have agreed to put together a framework to respond to the key issues.

The National Teacher Workforce Action Plan will be developed to help increase the number of people entering the profession, including through work to implement recommendations of the Quality Initial Teacher Education Review.

Education Ministers will meet again in December to consider a report on priorities for immediate action.

The National Teacher Workforce Action Plan will include actions in the following priority areas:

1. Elevating the profession

2. Improving teacher supply

3. Strengthening initial teacher education

4. Maximising the time to teach

5. Better understanding future teacher workforce needs

I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues to develop this essential national framework.
