New gateway to the Southwest National Park now underway

Work on a new gateway into the picturesque Southwest National Park and Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area is now underway.

Member for Franklin Nic Street said Tasmanian company AJR Construct is building a new shelter with amenities at Cockle Creek, a much-loved destination in the state’s far south.

“This is another example of the State Government’s record infrastructure investment in parks and reserves across the state that is providing new and updated facilities to meet visitor demand,” Mr Street said.

“These works at Cockle Creek will complement additional works within the Southwest National Park including road and carpark upgrades and improvements to the walking tracks and pedestrian areas.”

Member for Franklin Jacquie Petrusma said the $800,000 project was delivering on the Government’s Taking our National Parks to the Next Level election commitment.

“It is wonderful that the works are also being done by a local company, providing ongoing work for Tasmanians and value-adding to our economy as we continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Works will begin this month and are expected to be complete by June 2021.”
