State Service Review Final Report

The Tasmanian Government welcomes the State Service Review Final Report and recommendations, which have been released today.

The Report includes 77 recommendations, which are organised into a ‘Roadmap for Reform’ across five key domains: Principles and Values, Leadership, Capability, Workforce and Service Delivery.

The roadmap is comprehensive and bold and provides an opportunity to significantly change the State Service in Tasmania for the better, especially as we continue to work through the COVID-19 pandemic and its ongoing impact on our State.

As I’ve said before, there has never been a more important time to ensure the State Service is able to provide the leadership, advice and support required to ensure Tasmania continues to thrive.

Given the significance of the recommendations, we will consult the relevant public sector unions before releasing our final position on the report.

However, we are already taking action in some of the areas recommended by the review, including our $1.8 million commitment to support the ongoing work of the Centre for Review and Evaluation, which is a key recommendation of the Review, and increased funding for Service Tasmania to start improving its digital service offerings for Tasmanians through the development of a digital portal.

Additionally, as recommended by the Review, a small team is now in the process of being established with DPAC to coordinate the implementation of the recommendations when finalised.

The release of the final report follows a comprehensive examination of the state of the public service in Tasmania by Dr Ian Watt AC, based on extensive research and engagement throughout 2020, and in the first half of 2021.

I thank Dr Watt for the extensive time and effort he has put into completing this review, and look forward to consulting with the relevant public sector unions before releasing our final position on the recommendations.
