PAC report

The Government welcomes the release of the Public Accounts Committee’s final report on energy.

While we have only just received the report, early indications are that it validates and supports the Government’s strong actions both during and after the energy challenges.

Some key findings from the report include:

• Findings 14 and 15 found the previous Labor-Green Government lowered the preferred minimum water level by five per cent in order to chase profits from the carbon tax.
• Findings 32 and 33 found that there was no price increase experienced by the regulated customer base due to the energy challenge.
• Finding 61 confirmed that the CCGT at the Tamar Valley Power Station was put into dry layup in July 2013 by the former Labor-Green Government.

Importantly, Tasmania’s current energy supply position continues to be very sound when compared to the uncertainty in the national market. In addition, despite the ongoing uncertainty in the national market, as a result of the Government’s direct intervention Tasmanian electricity prices continue to be amongst the lowest electricity prices in the country.

The Government will now closely consider the recommendations contained in the report and we will have more to say about this tomorrow.
