Launch of the Zone and 100 days to NDIS

Today the Premier, Will Hodgman and the Minister for Human Services, Jacquie Petrusma officially opened the Zone, a custom designed space that allows young adults with disability aged 18-28 to meet up with friends and enjoy a range of activities.

The opening of the Zone coincides with the 100 day countdown until the commencement of transition to the full roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The Liberal Government is proud to deliver on its commitment to implement the full NDIS for the people of Tasmania, which is revolutionising the delivery of services to people living with disability and the way they are able to participate in the broader community.

The Premier, Will Hodgman, said the Zone is a great example of the practical benefits of the NDIS for Tasmanians with disability.

“The Zone provides a great space for young people to meet and catch up and enjoy a greater sense of independence", Mr Hodgman said.

The Premier thanked Liviende Veranto for their continued commitment to providing better and new services for people with disability.

“Around 10,600 Tasmanians living with disability, along with their families and carers, stand to benefit when the NDIS is fully rolled out by 1 July 2019.

“The Tasmanian Government is proud to support the full rollout of the NDIS, which will have such a positive impact in our State, and which we are able to do due to the strong budget we have delivered”.

From 1 July 2016, further eligible people with disability in Tasmania will start entering the NDIS. During 2016-17 alone a further 1,100 new people, aged between 12 and 28, will enter the scheme.

Minister Petrusma said that under the NDIS, organisations will be delivering new innovative programs to people living with disability who have more choice and control over the supports they can choose from.

“It is wonderful to see organisations such as Liviende Veranto embracing the opportunities that the NDIS offers”, Mrs Petrusma said.

“The delivery of The Zone is a great achievement and is an excellent example of the work that can be done to ensure that organisations continue to go from strength to strength under the NDIS.

“The Liberal Government is continuing to work in partnership with the disability sector throughout the roll out to ensure the best possible services are delivered to Tasmanians living with disability".

The full roll out of the scheme comes after a successful trial of the scheme for young people aged 15-24 years.

The Liberal Government is looking forward to the full roll out of the NDIS in Tasmania, commencing in 100 days.
