Joint venture agreement welcomed

Today’s announcement of a joint venture agreement between Petuna and Tassal in Macquarie Harbour is a welcome development in strengthening biosecurity and environmental management.

Minister Courtney: ``The Hodgman Liberal Government developed a Sustainable Industry Growth Plan for the Salmon Industry last year and one of its priorities is to address biosecurity issues and improved area management of regions like Macquarie Harbour.

``We are committed to a sustainable industry that enjoys public support and better management of fish stocks, marine leases and the well-being of fish in a sensitive area like Macquarie Harbour is what our Plan is striving to achieve.’’

Minister Archer: "It’s pleasing to see companies working together and I’m hopeful that coordinating fish farming operations in this way will enhance the ability of industry to more rapidly respond to changes observed in the environmental conditions of the Harbour.

``We have seen some improvements in Macquarie Harbour in recent months, and if initiatives like these contribute to further improvements, it will be a good result for industry and our environment.”
