Improved Novice Driver System Delivered

The Liberal Government is delivering on its promise to remove unnecessary barriers delaying novice drivers from showing they are ready to gain experience on the road.

From next Wednesday (10 December), authorised driving instructors will be able to undertake L2 assessments during daylight hours, seven days a week.

This will help to address the waiting times that currently exist for assessments by Government driving assessors, while giving novice drivers the choice of when, where and with whom they are assessed.

The initiative builds on our decision to remove from last month the minimum 28-day waiting period for Learners who failed an L2 assessment to book a re-test.

Importantly, it should be noted that the Government is not lowering standards expected of novice drivers; the reality is that young drivers today will continue to have to work harder than previous generations to earn their licences.

What we are addressing, however, are the delays that are causing frustration among those who are eager to gain a licence to seek employment, education and social opportunities.

The Registrar of Motor Vehicles will individually authorise suitably qualified driving instructors to undertake L2 assessments, and they will be listed online in the near future at www.transport.tas.gov.au

For driving instructors, this is a great example of how the Government is working with business to remove red tape and provide more opportunities.

The Liberal Government is also investing $1.5 million from the Road Safety Levy over three years to support not-for-profit Tasmanian organisations who conduct Learner Driver Mentor Programs to help disadvantaged learner drivers gain critical on-road experience.
