Celebrating our parks and rangers

The Hodgman Liberal Government is a strong supporter of Tasmania’s iconic parks and reserves and we recognise and appreciate the fine work of all those who manage them.

This Sunday (July 31) is World Ranger Day, which is an opportunity to recognise the great work our rangers do in protecting our natural and cultural treasures, and commemorates rangers who have been killed or injured undertaking their work around the world.

World Ranger Day is particularly significant in 2016 as Tasmania celebrates the centenary of two of its most popular national parks, Mount Field and Freycinet.

Free entry to Tasmania’s 19 national parks will be provided to all patrons on the weekend of 27-29 August 2016 – when Freycinet and Mount Field national parks will mark their centenary of reservation; and 24 September to 9 October 2016 – September school holiday period (Tasmania).

This great initiative will provide an incentive for those who don’t normally visit our national parks to take the opportunity to reconnect with our rich natural and cultural heritage, and I encourage all Tasmanians to do so.

Our Parks staff are essential assets in maintaining our stunning parks and wilderness, and World Ranger Day is an appropriate opportunity to reflect on what is involved in managing the State’s reserves.

The modern day Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service includes nearly 400 staff in a wide variety of roles such as rangers (including Working on Country Aboriginal Rangers), field officers, engineers, GIS specialists, visitor service officers, community engagement officers, historic heritage, interpretation and education officers, fire crews, fire management officers, accredited builders, marketing and communication and administration officers.

World Ranger Day is promoted by the 63 member associations of the International Ranger Federation and its partner, the Thin Green Line Foundation.
