Building momentum in tourism boom

It has been a record year for tourism in Tasmania and tomorrow’s State Budget will build on this momentum to continue creating jobs in the sector.

One of our key priorities is to make sure our regions share in the industry’s billion dollar boom, and events are a great way of drawing people to our towns.

The Budget will include $610,000 over three years to support and attract new events in regional Tasmania. The Regional Events Start-Up Program is aimed at kick-starting new and unique events, while ensuring they can be financially self-sustaining into the future.

The Regional Events Start-Up will:

  • Support new events and enable minor community events to go to the next level;
  • Grow and refresh events and festivals to share the record momentum with our regions;
  • Fill gaps in the events calendar and ensure our quieter seasons are action packed; and
  • Give more travellers even more reasons to visit Tasmania by supporting events.

Events are a very important part of our visitor experience. We currently invest more than $10 million a year in supporting 80 events. These attract around 70,000 visitors, who stay an average seven nights and spend $200 a day. That’s an injection of $100 million a year into our economy.

Tourism is booming in Tasmania and this Government is committed to making sure that our regions are well placed to share in the prosperity of a vibrant visitor economy.

This will further help us achieve our commitment to attract 1.5 million visitors to our state every year by 2020, which the industry tells us will create an additional 8,000 jobs
