TasTAFE reforms on track

The progress of key reforms in the first six-months of the TasTAFE Transition has been outlined in a review tabled in Parliament today.

Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth, Felix Ellis, said the review showed the Government was getting on with its plan to build a better TasTAFE that puts the learner at the centre and is delivering Tasmania’s future workforce.

“When the TasTAFE Act commenced on 1 July 2022 we committed to this six-month review to ensure our reforms were on track.

“We want to ensure TasTAFE is better meeting the needs and expectations of Tasmanian learners, employers and industries well into the future,” Minister Ellis said.

The review was undertaken by the Department of State Growth, in consultation with the TasTAFE Board and Senior Executive, and looked at progress being made in the organisation’s administrative and financial arrangements and governance framework as a not-for-profit government business. Importantly, TasTAFE has sought feedback from the workforce as part of the transition, and this engagement informed this work.

It also examined how well the new TasTAFE model is functioning based on key operational areas of students, courses, employees and engagement with industry, as well as progress against first-year actions under the TasTAFE Transition Implementation Plan.

“Overall the review found that significant progress has been made across each of the five priority areas outlined in the TasTAFE Transition to a better training future Implementation Plan,” Minister Ellis said.

“We are continuing to invest in TasTAFE as part of our $114 million plan, including recruiting more teachers and building new facilities like the Agricultural Centre of Excellence at Freer Farm Water and the Water and Energy Trades Centre of Excellence in Clarence.”

The next review of the implementation of the TasTAFE Act will be conducted by independent experts as soon as practicable after the 30-month anniversary of commencement.
