Tasmanian Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report 2022 released

Tasmania’s emissions profile continues to be the envy of the nation and the world, and we have maintained net negative emissions for the last seven years in a row.

Further details of this nation-leading result are provided in the Tasmanian Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report 2022 released today. The Report breaks down Tasmania’s emissions by sector, including in energy, transport, agriculture, waste, industry and land use and forestry.

In 2020, Tasmania was the only state to achieve net-zero emissions, due to our sustainably managed forest estate, our long-term renewable energy investments along with ongoing emissions reductions in our waste sector.

Tasmania continues to sequester more greenhouse gas emissions than we emit, contributing to solutions for the global challenge of climate change.

The Report shows that in 2020, Tasmania’s net emissions were negative 3.73 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2e), which is 121 per cent lower than in 1990. This outstanding result has also been gazetted today in accordance with legislative requirements.

But modelling shows that as our economy and population grows, and the risk of severe bushfires increases, we need to continue to reduce emissions to maintain our net-zero status. The first step to reduce emissions is to know their source, and this report provides an important reference to guide our action on climate change.

The Climate Change (State Action) Amendment Bill 2021 outlines the Government’s nation-leading framework on climate change, including a target of net zero emissions, or lower, from 2030, and the development of Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plans, by sector.

Tasmania’s enviable emissions status, and our ambitious targets, will deliver brand benefits, and bring investment and jobs, while adding value to everything we offer and produce here: in hospitality and tourism, agriculture, aquaculture, science, advanced manufacturing and resources.
