Safe at Home measures supporting the prevention of family violence

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Elise Archer has announced a range of measures to support the delivery of Safe at Home, Tasmania’s nationally recognised integrated criminal justice response to family violence.

The Attorney-General said the Rockliff Liberal Government remains committed to doing everything we can to ensure all Tasmanians are safe, respected and free from all forms of family and sexual violence.

“Our Government recognises the devastating impact that family violence can have on its victims and the wider community,” the Attorney-General said.

“That’s why ongoing funding of $4.9 million has been provided in this year’s Budget to further support the prevention of family violence.

"This includes:

  • committing $160,000 to expand the Victims of Crime Service by recruiting a full-time Counsellor position to increase Victims of Crime Service counselling services in the north of the State, with a particular focus in the north-west;
  • providing $320,485 for this financial year for legal assistance and representation services to people experiencing family violence;
  • completing 114 security upgrades under the “Keeping Women Safe in Their Homes program” to allow women and children experiencing family violence to remain safely in their home; and
  • delivering 163 Flexible Support Packages to provide holistic and practical support to people experiencing family violence, to enhance safety and wellbeing when leaving an abusive relationship.

“These initiatives under the Action Plan will provide greater support and protection for victims-survivors and increases our ability to hold perpetrators to account for their actions.”

The Attorney-General said this will complement the significant work done in recent years to strengthen our response to family violence, including introducing the Eligible Persons Register to inform family violence victims, introducing a new standalone offence for non-fatal strangulation; and most recently, creating a new serial family violence perpetrator declaration framework.

“This Action Plan will continue to strengthen our legislation to provide greater support and protection for victims-survivors, and increase our ability to hold perpetrators to account for their actions,” the Attorney-General said.
