More roofs over the heads of Tasmanians ahead of Christmas

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is providing an unprecedented investment into public housing and home affordability. And that investment is leading to finished houses right now.

In partnership with the Government, Centacare Evolve Housing has completed six new two-bedroom houses in Ravenswood. This means houses that will be homes to six Tasmanian households by Christmas. It is terrific news for Tasmanians who are struggling to find affordable housing options.

These homes have been built under the Community Housing Growth Program and are part of the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s substantial investment in social and affordable housing.

Here in Faraday Street Ravenswood, we are building 36 dwellings as part of this project – 28 social housing properties and eight properties that will be available for affordable home ownership opportunities.

We will continue to build more homes here each month until the project is completed in about May next year.

On this site alone, the Tasmanian Liberal Government has made an investment of $4.06 million, which will provide a total injection of almost $12 million into the local economy. That’s more homes for Tasmanians in need and more work for Tasmanians as well as support for local businesses.

Ultimately, increasing housing supply is the only way to combat rising house prices and to get more Tasmanians into suitable homes.

We are responding with record level investment of $615 million into social and affordable housing, and homelessness initiatives, including our record election commitment of $280 million to extend our building program of new social housing for Tasmanians in need, which is the biggest in this state for decades.

On top of our previous commitment to build 1,500 homes by 30 June 2023, we have increased our commitment to build an extra 2,000 new homes by 2027, or a total of 3,500 new homes by 2027 to help our most vulnerable, which includes our record investment to help about 5,000 Tasmanian households out of housing stress or homelessness.

Thanks to Centacare Evolve for their commitment to delivering and managing social housing and congratulations to the new tenants of these wonderful homes.
